Botox Injections For Wrinkles

For the last few years if you have wanted to eliminate the signs of aging like wrinkles, sagging skin and other lines then it is more than likely you would consider using botox; despite how often this treatment is used, few people understand the method it uses. In order to appreciate just what this is we need a brief history lesson into its discovery, quite a while ago now. Botulinum toxin was first researched back in the 1960’s; it was used to treat patients with neurological problems.

It wasn’t until around 1989 that the Federal Drug Administration agreed to allow its use in medical procedures to help people with disorders of the eye; patients suffering with uncontrollable blinking and crossed eyes were given this and sometimes those who suffered with wrinkles as well. More research was carried out into other medical uses and in 2000 it was allowed to be used on patients that had a cervical dystonia condition; it was found to be effective at helping patients with neck and shoulder contractions but other eye disorders were included at the same time. The strange discovery they made quite by accident was that botox helps to reduce the visible lines between the eyebrows; this discovery won over the FDA who agreed that it could be used in cosmetic procedures from 2002.

Botox has a paralyzing affect when it is injected into areas of the forehead which control the muscles that cause frowning; after a number of treatments the lines start to lessen. Continued treatments mean in many cases the lines disappear and now the same treatment is used on other areas of the face like the crows’ feet, laughter lines and other facial wrinkles. The injections are a purified and watered down version of the sometimes fatal Botulinum poison; because of the purification process it can be used in cosmetic surgery.

Of course we all like to laugh and obviously use our faces for other gestures but the muscles controlling this are the cause of the line we see and obviously, these injections can stop this. This treatment is able to take back, for a temporary period, all those years of lines, creases and wrinkles that has formed from the use of our facial muscles; many cosmetic manufacturers have tried to create creams to eliminate the creases but this is the only treatment to date that can actually rid them from us. Because botox paralyzes the facial muscles, normal movement, expressions and gestures are almost impossible to make; because facial movement is reduced, it can give a doll like appearance to the user.

People still have enough movement to look fairly normal but not enough to cause these wrinkles; so in fact by taking these injections they help you to look younger. Whilst popular this cosmetic treatment is still very expensive for what it is; often considered something only celebrities can afford because a single injection can cost anywhere from a few hundred to over a thousand dollars. It may be a few years yet before we see the result of long term use of botox but that doesn’t seem to concern those people who are using it at this moment.
